Skeet
Skeet the Springer Spaniel
History: Neglected during the daytime. Left to run free in the garden. Re-homed.
Age: 4 months.
Story: Skeet was re-homed at just 4 months old. He was left to run free all day due to his owners working full-time. Although not mistreated, Skeet was not given the proper attention. In his new home, Skeet received more intensive training and the proper attention. He was progressing very well in the home, but out on a walk was not good. He pulled on the lead and could not be trusted off the lead.
Thinking back to the idea that a pack should stick together and no pack member wants to be left behind, his new owner decided to take a risk and try out the truth of the theory. At a spot far from main roads and with plenty of space and places to hide, Skeet was let off the lead. As normal, he bolted. But this time, instead of calling him or running after him, his owner decided to do just the opposite. She ran in the other direction and hid behind a tree. Moments later, she heard the rustling of leaves. Peeping out from behind the tree, she saw Skeet. He was frantically searching. He barked a couple of times and with no reply, continued his search. After a couple of minutes, his owner casually walked from behind the tree, ignoring Skeet as though all was normal. To her delight and amazement, he ran to her side and immediately lay at her feet. Trying not to get too excited, she calmly said he was a good boy and then continued walking. Skeet remained at her side, looking constantly to her for direction. That was the last time he ever left her side.
The hard work and application of simple pack training, prepared Skeet for a truly successful future. He qualified as a candidate for further training and a career as a working Police Dog.
